Learn about how we measure your carbon footprint
Our methodology and approach
We measure:
Utilities
You’ll need to tell us about the utilities you use and how much of it (if any) comes from renewable sources.
Transportation
School transportation is a big ticket item. We calculate emissions from your school busses.
Excursions & Trips
If your staff and student fly around the world you’ll need to share this data with us.
Purchasing
Your annual consumables are also included in your emissions calculation.
Trees!
If your schools is in a forest, you’re the lucky one! Trees on campus will offest your emissions.
Utilities
How much electricity do you use?
How green is your electricity?
How much natural gas do you use?
How many people are connected to your wifi?
How much heating oil do you use?
Transportation
Big busses on the school run
How many big busses do you have and how far does the average bus travel.
Small busses are also important!
We also need information about the small busses you operate and any other vehicles your school owns.
Excursions & trips
Long distance school trips
Air miles add up… especially when 30 students are flying off together. We’ll need information on how many air mile your students (and the supervising staff) add up over the year.
Recruiting, professional development, conferences....
Staff air travel on official business is also included in the calculation. We’ll need those numbers too.
Purchasing
Electronic goods
We’ll be able to estimate the carbon footprint of your spending on electical goods when you share your data with us.
Stationary...
Another big contributor to the footprint of some schools is their use of stationary for photocopiers, printers and, or course, wonderful works of art!
Books
Buying lots of books every year? We’ll need to understand how much you spend here if we are to calculate your footprint.
Trees
On the upside!
If your schools is in a forest, you’re the lucky one! Trees on campus will offest your emissions… the more you have the better it is…
We don’t measure:
Delivery from Suppliers
This would be calculated within your suppliers’ carbon footprint.
Food Sales
Your customers will bear the burden of their consumption choices.
Beverage Sales
This would be part of your customer’s carbon footprint.
3rd Party Delivery
Uber Eats and other delivery services calculate their own carbon footprint.
Credibility & transparency above all else
We understand the importance of integrity:
Certification that gives credibility
Our certification process allows you to credibly promote yourself as a carbon neutral school. Learn more.
Backed by a Canadian non-profit
We are powered by the Carbon Neutral School Foundation, a mission driven BC Society.
Together we make sustainable change happen
